I am Indonesian, and to pick one particular dish from my country isn't easy because honestly speaking, we have lots of good food! But there's this one celebration menu that really stands out from the others and also represents the others at the same time. Moreover, I made this once with my high school friends for our class teacher's birthday so I think I can share a little bit of the excitement! It's called "Tumpeng". The special thing about it is that the rice is moulded into a cone shape like a mountain. It is placed in the middle of tampah (a round container made of woven bamboo) that is already covered by banana leaves. The rice usually used is yellow rice (cook with coconut milk and colored with turmeric), but we used plain white rice.
And then surrounding it are assorted Indonesian traditional side dishes. My friends and I split the side dishes so there are at least 2 people bringing each one of them, and we made a really good team! The side dishes that we made are peanuts with white bait fishes, telor balado (fried eggs with chili sauce), fried noodle, potato fritters, fried tofu, sweet and dry tempeh, Indonesian fried chicken (cooked with coconut milk instead of flour), shredded omelette, cucumber, and last but most important, sambal terasi. This dish is perfect for any traditional celebrations. And it was perfect for my teacher's birthday surprise! (Andriana)
